Somatropin belongs to a class of medicines known as growth stimulants. Somatropin is a synthetic growth hormone. Growth hormone is naturally produced in our body by the pituitary gland and is needed to stimulate the growth of children.

Somatropin is used to treat growth hormone deficiency in children. It replaces growth hormone that children cannot produce naturally. It can also be used to promote the growth of children who are born small during gestational age and are significantly shorter than their classmates by the age of 2-4 years. Somatropin is used to promote the growth of children with Turner syndrome and short stature for no apparent reason (idiopathic short stature or short stature without growth hormone deficiency).

Somatropin can also be used in adults with growth hormone deficiency that develops in adulthood or has been present since childhood. Growth hormone deficiency in adulthood can result from pituitary disease, surgery, radiation therapy, hypothalamic disease, or trauma.
